Bishop Auckland

Situated approx. 3mls West of the AIM. 20mls South of Newcastle upon Tyne and 7mls South of Durham City.  

A beautiful Ancient and Historic Market Town. Situated in the south west of the County of Durham. It has been the seat of the Bishop of Durham since the 12thC. It is the largest town in the Wear Valley, with good shopping and busy markets.

It has a good choice of cafes, pubs, and Hotels. With leisure facilities available including those at Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex (01388 602557)

Town Hall
A library, conference and entertainment facilities, arts and exhibition areas, plus a Tourist Information Centre (01388 604922) can all be located in the "French-style" Town Hall, a grade 1 listed building situated in the Market Place.  

Discovery Centre
Also in the Market Place is the Discovery Centre (01388 662666) with regular exhibitions of local artwork and interpretive displays celebrating the history and architecture of the town.

Auckland Castle
Auckland Castle is located near the Market Place and is situated in 800 acres of beautiful Parkland which is open to the Public.

Stan Laurel
The town was once the home of Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame.

Dixieland
Jeremiah Dixon, who gave his name to 'Dixieland' was born in the town.

Railways
The whole area is credited for the birth of the Railways and the World's first passenger railway line began from Phoenix Row, 3 miles west of the town.
