Standing out as the street’s
‘modern, old-building’, is the Victorian red brick
building of The Old Shire Hall, with its green copper dome. The building, which
is currently the administrative
HQ of the University of
Durham, was
once the Old Shire Hall (1895). In 1909 the first all Labour County Council in
Britain
assembled in the building. In 1963 DurhamUniversity, took
over the building as its administrative HQ.
